Software Development Intern

Role Overview

As an intern on the Pengin-Pi-3 project, you will learn how to architect, build, and maintain a full-stack open-source ERP system. You will work with a modern web development and CI/CD stack featuring Python, Django, PostgreSQL, and Docker.

Because this project is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL-3), all code you write remains open source. You are free to maintain, publish, share, and leverage your contributions on your personal GitHub profile to advance your engineering career and personal portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

• Full-Stack Development: Write, test, and maintain features for the Pengin-Pi-3 backend and core application modules using Python and Django.
• Database Management: Assist in designing schemas, writing queries, and optimizing performance on PostgreSQL.
• CI/CD & DevOps Integration: Learn and apply continuous integration and automated deployment workflows.
• Code Quality & Peer Reviews: Participate in pull request reviews, refactoring sessions, and community code discussions.
• Self-Paced Learning: Engage with provided training materials, recorded demonstrations, and periodic tech lectures to build your engineering toolkit.

What You Will Learn

Through mentorship and hands-on contributions, you will gain practical experience in:

• Web framework development using Python & Django.
• Relational database architecture with PostgreSQL.
• Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
• Open-source collaboration, Git workflows, and issue tracking.
• Architectural design patterns for ERP and business management systems.

Qualifications & Skills

• Basic Programming Knowledge: Experience or coursework in Python (or another object-oriented language) and fundamental relational database concepts.
• Self-Motivated & Curious: Comfort with self-paced learning and working in an asynchronous remote environment.
• Interest in Open Source: Enthusiasm for building community-driven software and public portfolio projects.
• Communication: Ability to communicate clearly over email or developer channels (Slack, Discord, or GitHub Issues).

No previous professional software engineering experience is required -- this position is structured as a learning opportunity.

• Candidate-Set Schedule: You determine your own hours and time commitment. Contributions are entirely voluntary, and ongoing participation is based on your desire to stay involved.
• Minimal Meeting Overhead: Expect typically one short weekly sync call. If active communication occurs via messenger or email during the week, formal calls are kept to a minimum or omitted entirely.
