What to Expect When Interviewing at Tobu Pengin

At Tobu Pengin, we know that interviewing can be stressful. We want to remove the mystery behind our process so you can show up as your authentic self. We believe in hiring people, not just resumes, and we build our hiring experience around honesty, empathy, and mutual respect.

Here is a look inside our interview process and how you can best prepare for your conversation with us.

1. The Opening: A Warm Welcome

We don’t start interviews with rapid-fire questioning. Instead, we begin with a casual introduction:

  • Who we are: We’ll share a bit about Tobu Pengin, what our team does, and who we are as individuals—including our career backgrounds, hobbies, and personal interests.
  • Who you are: We set a warm, conversational tone hoping you’ll feel comfortable sharing your story. We want to hear about your strengths, your career goals, and what makes you tick.
  • Human-first approach: We are humans first, workers second. If life events have shaped your journey, we empathize. We love getting to know the real person behind the application.

2. The Resume Review: Your Personal Syllabus

Think of your resume as the roadmap for our discussion. We will dive into your work history, education, certifications, and project experience to see how they align with the role.

  • Relating past experience: The better you can connect your previous roles to the position you’re applying for, the more confident we feel in your readiness.
  • Keep it honest: We pay close attention to claims, buzzwords, and technical lists. If you list something on your resume, be prepared to talk about it comfortably. Embellishments won't immediately disqualify you, but being unable to explain your own resume hurts your standing against truthful candidates.
  • The Bottom Line: Give us an accurate, honest resume. We respect candidates who can candidly explain what they know—and what they are still learning.

3. The Technical Interview: Fundamentals Over Trivia

Let’s be honest: standard technical interviews often suck. Too many companies fail talented candidates by testing them on obscure language nuances or niche trivia that rarely matters on the job. We take a different approach:

  • Focus on core fundamentals: We assess core engineering principles relative to the experience level claimed on your resume.
  • Proportional expectations: If you hold advanced academic degrees, specialized certifications, or senior credentials, expect a deeper dive into core fundamentals. We believe higher credentials should reflect a firm grasp of the foundational science behind the tools. If you’re a heavily credentialed applicant, brush up on the fundamental concepts from your coursework!

4. Presentation & Remote Setup

Most of our initial interviews take place remotely, though some happen on-site.

  • Dress Code: We aim for business casual or neat casual. A clean T-shirt and jeans are perfectly fine for remote interviews, provided clothing doesn't feature political messaging or vulgar graphics. If visiting us in person, business casual is recommended (though you’re welcome to wear a suit if you like to dress up).
  • Tech Check: Please download the necessary meeting software and test your audio and video before the call. While tech glitches happen, spending half your interview time troubleshooting software signals a lack of preparation and cuts into your opportunity to showcase your skills.
  • Integrity & AI Policy: Maintain natural eye contact with your camera. We do not micro-manage eye movement, but we have zero tolerance for AI chatbot usage or live-cheating during interviews. We actively detect these behaviors, and using AI assistance during an evaluation results in an immediate, unexplained fail. Be yourself—that is who we want to hire.

5. Wrapping Up: The Two-Way Street

An interview goes both ways. We reserve time at the end for your questions—not just about the job duties, but about our culture, team dynamics, or even your interviewer’s experience. We want teammates who are genuinely interested in building a career at Tobu Pengin, not just looking for a temporary gig until the next option opens up.

Our Core Hiring Values

  • Integrity over Ego: We will readily hire a candidate who is slightly less skilled but brutally honest, humble, and eager to learn over a hyper-credentialed candidate with an attitude.
  • We Value the Underdog: Employment gaps due to personal circumstances are nothing to hide. Own your story. Tell us what happened, how you navigated it, and what you learned along the way.
  • Transparent Feedback: If you fall just short of our expectations, we’ll give you constructive feedback on what to work on. When we say "keep in touch and apply again," we genuinely mean it. Many great hires joined us on their second attempt.
  • Data Privacy: Your candidate data is safe with us. We never sell or share applicant details with third parties, and records are safely discarded after a reasonable retention period.

At Tobu Pengin, we invite candidates of all backgrounds and walks of life to apply. If you have the drive, the core skills, and the integrity to grow with us, we want to hear your story.

Good luck, and we look forward to meeting you!
